Spring Mountains National Recreation Area - Known to the locals as Mount Charleston, this National Recreation Area covers 316,000 acres and offers many activities, including hiking, skiing, and snowboarding.  The town of Mt. Charleston has an elevation of 7,717 ft., and the ski slopes at Las Vegas Ski & Snowboard Resort start at 8,510 feet.  With this altitude, the climate is alpine, and thus the favorite activity at Spring Mountains National Recreation Area is simply beating the summer heat of Las Vegas.

Las Vegas Ski & Snowboard Resort has a base elevation of 8510', a top elevation of 9370', 10 feet of snow per year plus nighttime snowmaking.

Southern Nevada Zoological-Botanical Park - The only zoo in Las Vegas covers three acres and is home to over 150 species of plants and animals including every species of venomous reptile native to the Las Vegas area. Botanical displays include endangered cycads and rare bamboos.  The only family of Barbary Apes in the United States is found here.  Visiting this zoo is a great family event all year.

Nevada State Museum & Historical Society - Located for years at Lorenzi Park, this superb museum has fascinating displays about Nevada's  natural and man-made history.  Natural history displays include a 48-foot icthyosaur fossil,  skeletons of a tiny horse and a huge sloth, and much more.  Man-made history exhibits include a large display about nuclear testing in Nevada. You can also learn about the history of the Las  Vegas Strip and casinos.  In 2009 the museum  moves down the street to Springs Preserve.  Note that a highlight in the new museum is a display about the discovery of dinosaur bones in Nevada. 

Downtown to Red Rock Bike Trail - If you are a "roadie", one of the best riding places in the world is Red Rock Canyon, either along Hwy. 159 or around the Red Rock Canyon Scenic Loop.  Local bicyclists come in via the Downtown to Red Rock Bike Trail along Alta Dr., which jogs south on Desert Foothills Dr., and then turns west onto to Hwy. 159.  You can also start at the Red Rock Canyon Visitor Center, or at a lookout along the highway.

Springs Preserve - The family can enjoy galleries with exhibits about the history of Nevada, and  about conservation and Nevada's future. You can see up close live Gila monsters and other lizards, as well as snakes, rabbits, spiders, and bats.  Springs Preserve has a garden nature trail, a desert center, and its  "ORIGEN" experience.  See www.springspreserve.org.

COWBOY TRAIL RIDES - Visitors to Las Vegas may book a wonderful tour atop a horse with Cowboy Trail Rides.  Call (702) 387-2457 to reserve one of their excursions, which range from 1 hour long to all day, either on the Blue Diamond Hill trails, or across the highway in Red Rock Canyon.  Either way, the excitement of the ride and the scenery will never be forgotten.

The Sport Center - Attractions include 16 world-class batting cages, a 37' rock wall for climbing, super-fast go-karts,  a huge arcade, billiard tables, and the Backyard Adventure, perfect for your kid's birthday party and for company picnics or events.

The Silverton Hotel Aquarium - This 117,000-gallon saltwater aquarium has 4,000 tropical fish, plus a few sharks and stingrays.  Fish feedings are in the afternoon. 

Red Rock Canyon National Conservation Area - Just 15 miles west of Las Vegas and easily seen from The Strip, Red Rock Canyon is absolutely too amazing for words.  This is the flagship park of the Bureau of Land Management, and it looks like it ought to be a National Park.  Only one million of Las Vegas' tens of millions of annual visitors take the time to see Red Rock Canyon, but if everybody knew about it then they would all come for a look.  The park's most famous feature is the breathtaking Keystone Thrust.  The cliff walls within the park are 3,000 feet high.  There are over 1,700 named rock climbs here, making Red Rock Canyon the rock climbing capital of the world.  There are also miles and miles of hiking and mountain biking trails, and road biking on its 13.2-mile Scenic Loop is a great ride.  Details of this wonderful park are available for you who buy a copy of Franko's Map of Red Rock Canyon.

Spring Mountain Ranch State Park - Heading northwest on Blue Diamond Rd, turn left on Spring Mountain Ranch Rd.  This ranch is a 520-acre oasis offering tours and the Summer Theater program, featuring musicals and plays that are fun for the whole family.  This is also a great place for a picnic amongst 400-year-old trees.

Bonnie Springs Old Nevada - Heading up out on Blue Diamond Rd, turn onto Bonnie Springs Rd.  This 115-acre ranch replicates an 1800's mining town, with actors having gunfights in the street.  You'll see a saloon, a miniature train, cactus garden, opera house, horseback riding, a petting zoo, and a whole lot of great scenery in the surrounding mountains. Your visit is worth every penny of the admission.

Cottonwood Valley - Many designated hiking, mountain biking and equestrian trails surround the town of Blue Diamond and extend southward of Hwy. 160.  For details, refer to Franko's Map of Red Rock Canyon.  The use of these trails is dominated by mountain bikers who enjoy miles of singletrack year round.  The best starting point is at Blue Diamond's McGhie's Bike Outpost.

Ethel M Chocolate Factory and Botanical Cactus Gardens - Located at 2 Cactus Garden Dr off Sunset Way.  Visitors get to see chocolates  being made, sample gourmet treats, and wander through the maze of paths at the Botanical  Cactus Gardens for free.  The chocolate factory  provides miniature cooler packs to keep  purchased goodies from melting in the Las Vegas heat.

The Liberace Museum is in the Liberace Plaza at 1775 E. Tropicana Ave. (at Spencer Ave.).  Here, tribute is paid to Liberace (1919 - 1986), one of Las Vegas' all time great entertainers, renowned for his amazing piano play, gigantic personality, extravagent outfits, and the ever-present candelabra on his piano.  "Mr. Showmanship" acquired an astounding array of prestigious awards for his astonishing performances.

Clark County Heritage Museum - Teaches visitors about the history of Las Vegas, from prehistoric times to present day through timelines, interactive displays, and exhibits.  Also found here are a train engine, train depot, and a ghost town complete with a blacksmith, jail and general store.

Sloan Canyon National Conservation Area - Designated in 2002, this 75 square mile conservation area is famous for its petroglyphs, which are THE premier early Native American rock art of Nevada.  They span a 2,000 year period.  At the Sloan Rd exit go east and then go north on Las Vegas Blvd. for just 0.1 mile, where you turn right on a dirt road heading east.  Go 3.9 miles on this dirt road,which becomes a powerline road.  At power pole # 12084, go 0.25 miles further to a two track road on the right. There is a rock pile marking the start of the two track road.  Go about 1 mile to the rock barrier, and you are there.  Meanwhile, please be respectful as this site is sacred to local Native Americans.  Located off I-15 east from Sloan Road.

Lake Mead National Recreation Area - The centerpieces of the recreation area are Lake Mead and Lake Mohave.  Here three desert ecosystems - the Mojave Desert, the Great Basin Desert, and the Sonoran Desert - meet.  This area is popular for swimming, water skiing, sunbathing, fishing, hiking, photography, and sightseeing.  Visitors also tour Hoover Dam and its Visitor Center.

Boulder Dam Hotel & Hoover Dam Museum - The historic hotel was built in 1933, and within the hotel is the museum, which tells the story of the Boulder Canyon Project as it was experienced by the people who braved Southern Nevada's desolate desert to build Hoover Dam and Boulder City.  Located at 1305 Arizona St, Boulder City.

Alan Bible Visitor Center – Features interactive, hands-on exhibits relating to the Mojave Desert and Lake Mead National Recreation Area.

Lake Mead - The largest man-made lake and reservoir in the USA, formed by Hoover Dam, is popular for boating, fishing, swimming, and water skiing.  There are numerous marinas that rent large and small boats, and the area has many coves with rocky cliffs and sandy beaches to explore.  Also, there are several islands that vary in size depending on the water level.

Lake Las Vegas - This is a 320-acre lake behind a mile-wide, 18-story high earthen dam, with over 3000 acres of fancy development around it.  Lake Las Vegas has several hotels and casinos including Monte Lago Village Resort, Loews Lake Las Vegas Resort (formerly the Hyatt Regency), The Ritz-Carlton  (pictured), Lake Las Vegas, and the Casino Monte Lago.

Fish Hatchery - For free you can check out the trout that are grown for Lake Mead and Lake Mohave.

Skymania Fun Center - Just a few miles out on Tropicana Ave is the funnest of fun centers in the world, where you can spend an hour (or more) trampoline jumping, 3-D dodgeballing, getting winded with skyrobics, and the incredible new sport of SkyZone.  Skymania is amazing!

Marjorie Barrick Museum of Natural History - Located at UNLV at 4505 Maryland, this free museum is a fabulous educational resource, with artifacts from many ancient Native American  civilizations, including the Hopi and Paiute Indians, Olmecs, Mayans, Aztecs, and others.  Also featured are desert reptiles including Gila monsters and desert tortoises, plus birds and insects.

Atomic Testing Museum - Dedicated to portraying world history through varied representations of the story of the Nevada Test Site and its nuclear programs.  The Nevada Test Site, located about 65 miles northwest of Las Vegas, has 1,350 square miles of desert and mountainous terrain.  Hundreds of nuclear tests were conducted at this site from 1951 to 1992.

Old Las Vegas Mormon State Historic Park - Here are the remnants of an adobe fort built by Mormon missionaries in 1855 as a place to rest and get provisions half-way from Salt Lake City and Los Angeles.  These were the first permanent non-native settlers in the Las Vegas Valley.  The Visitor Center has exhibits on the history of the site, as well as artifacts from 1855.

Andretti/Gordon Racing School - Indeed, you can see an exciting race at the The Las Vegas Motor Speedway, but for the ultimate thrill, you can have a race of your own in a powerful NASCAR Race Car, an Indy-Style Race Car, or a hot BMW Race Car at the Mario Andretti /Jeff Gordon Racing School. After training and getting into a racing outfit, you will climb into a race car and zoom solo for a few fast, exhiliarating laps around the oval.   Get online and visit  www.andrettigordon.com

Las Vegas Natural History Museum - A great museum for kids and the whole family, with interactive exhibits and educational programs relating to the natural sciences.  Includes a dinosaur gallery, wild Nevada gallery, a marine life gallery with a 3,000-gallon tank filled with sea creatures, and much more.  The dinosaur gallery features a 35-foot tyrannosaurus rex (T-rex) realistic enough to be scary, plus an ichthyosaur, a huge, toothy marine reptile that lived right here in Nevada during the reign of the dinosaurs.  See www.lvnhm.org

Lied Discovery Children's Museum - Nevada's best family museum features hands-on exhibits in the arts, sciences, nature, music, and humanities, and unique interactive exhibits for kids from toddler to youth and adults.  Kids love the museum's "Grossology", where they get to learn all about oozy, slimy, crusty, scaly, stinky and gunky bodily functions.   Visit  www.ldm.org.

Theater Level Displays: Murals, maps, photos, and displays of Hoover Dam's amazing history.

Theater One: "How the West was Won": You'll love this film on how the Bureau of Reclamation tamed the rivers to help settle the American West.

The Power Plant Generators:  Monstrous elevators take you 500 feet down through solid rock, then you walk through a long tunnel to view the Nevada side power plant and its eight giant hydroelectric generators.  Awesome!  

Penstock Viewing Platform: View 30 ft. diameter pipes that can transport 90,000 gallons per second from Lake Mead to the hydroelectric generators.

The Exhibit Gallery: Located at the Visitor Center, these exhibits show the local natural history, plus how Hoover Dam was constructed and how it works.  

The Overlook: This is the most photogenic spot at the Visitor Center, with a stunning panoramic view of Lake Mead and the Colorado River.  Guides point out significant features of the dam.  Viewing this magnificent, massive man-made structure creates a new respect and awe for American achievements.

Winged Figures of the Republic - One of the highlights for visitors is this artwork, which makes you ask "What does this mean?" 

The Nevada Intake Tower Artwork  - Learn all about water power for generating electricity, plus see artwork incorporated into the towers at the power plant elevators.

Talks by Guides - Every 15 minutes from 9:30am to 5:45pm.
